Before you throw out your back, or break your neck, check out these helpful hints.

With our beloved Maine in the midst of a deep freeze, simply walking to your car can be problematic. Orthopedic surgeons at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai say that shuffling while you walk on ice is the best way to prevent taking an ugly spill. You may look like a fool doing it, moving your feet slightly apart while you walk could save you the pain and discomfort of hitting the deck hard.

In a statement, the surgeons wrote, "Take a sidestep and bring your other foot along to meet your lead foot. Walking in this unusual method while bending your knees allows for better balance" Also, they suggest that you try to land on the hand or arm that you don't write with.

Here a few video tips that can help you avoid a trip to the ER.
