Bangor police on Tuesday shut down part of Essex Street after finding suspected explosives in a residence there.

After executing a search warrant at 979 Essex Street, police discovered suspected explosives. As a precaution, a portion of the road was shut down and some neighboring residents were evacuated.

On Wednesday, police charged James Smith, 35, with Criminal Use of Explosives and with Possession of Firearms by a Prohibited Person. Both crimes are Class C felonies.

Members of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team arrived and safely removed the suspected explosives at about 6:45 p.m. The road has since been re-opened and all residents have been allowed to return home.
