A wintry mix is causing roads in Southern Maine to become slippery, so the Maine Department of Transportation has lowered the speed limit. And now, speed limits have been reduced from Bangor to Augusta.

MDOT officials have lowered the speed limit on I-295 from Topsham to Gardiner to 45 miles per hour and are urging drivers to slow down and be careful. WGME-TV reports that freezing rain caused many people to slide off the road. Speed limits on I-95 from Bangor to Augusta are also reduced to 45 mph.

For information on road conditions, consider joining the Facebook group 'Maine Weather/Road Conditions.' On the site, folks can ask direct questions, like 'How's Route 9, between Brewer and Clifton?' and may get answers from folks traveling in that area. In addition, log onto the New England 511 page for updated road condition information.
