Slide the City has abruptly canceled its Aug. 1 event set for Portland, Maine, saying "the short Maine summers have forced Slide the City onto the 2016 calendar."

The event was to feature a 1,000-foot, three-lane slip and slide and had city approval to set up on Franklin Street from Cumberland Ave to Fox Street. More than 12,000 people had planned to attend, according to the Facebook event created by Slide the City.

Here's more from the release:

“Slide the City has announced that its much-anticipated event will hit the streets of Portland next summer. Despite months of hard work and coordination from both city officials and event organizers, the short Maine summers have forced Slide the City onto the 2016 calendar. Both groups are disappointed, but excited for a bigger event in heat of the season next year….With more time to coordinate, event organizers expect a bigger, better and wetter slide next year. ”
