A mother who was on her way to be induced at the hospital was killed in a crash but her unborn baby survived.

Skowhegan Police say the 27-year-old woman was driving an SUV when the vehicle hit black ice just before 7 o'clock Monday morning on a stretch known as the Canaan Road. She lost control of the vehicle near the intersection with East Ridge Road, Eaton Mountain Road, and Route 2. The vehicle hit a snowbank sideways and rolled over, coming to rest on the driver's side on a frozen pond.

According to centralmaine.com, the woman was killed in the crash but her unborn baby was delivered by emergency C-section at Redington-Fairview Hospital. Police say the newborn was in critical condition as of noon today. An adult man and an 8-year-old girl were also in the vehicle. They were hospitalized and their conditions were not available. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

We'll update this story when more details become available.
