A Maine made ship is currently in route to the Karimata Strait to aid in the recovery effort of the AirAsia Flight 8501.

The U.S.S. Sampson was built in Bath at Bath Iron Works. It was christened and launched back in 2006. The ship was recruited for the search because of its special sonar devices that help search the ocean floor.

Bodies and wreckage from the AirAsia flight were found on Tuesday in the Karimata Strait off the coast of Borneo. The aircraft went missing on its way to Singapore on Sunday.

Severe thunder storms were in the area when the plane disappeared off radar.

About 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the U.S are involved in the effort.
