A fisherman on Saturday reported seeing a great white shark off Moody Beach in Wells, but experts say the man likely saw a basking shark.

Jaron Thibault reported seeing a great white about 1.2 miles off the beach but officials were not able to confirm the sighting.

A photo of the shark was posted on Facebook.

“This is the dorsal fin of a basking shark, not a white shark as reported on the news,”said a scientist at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

The conservancy believes it's a basking shark, which is not a threat to humans, because their dorsal fins are more rounded than a great white's.

Unconfirmed great white sightings were also reported off Portland and Old Orchard Beach on Saturday.
