November is National Runaway Prevention Month, and we here at Z-107.3 are committed to raising awareness of the serious issue of teen homelessness in the area.In Maine, it's estimated that there are 12,000 homeless children on the streets on any given night. In Bangor, that number is somewhere around 200 and 250, based on a 1990 report commissioned by the Bangor City Council.

The Shaw House in Bangor has provided services to more than 8,500 homeless youth ages 10-23 since the facility opened in 1991 in the aftermath of that report. The Shaw House, located at 136 Union Street, provides emergency shlter, food, clothing, educational services and family and group counseling to at-risk youth.

If you are thinking of running away from home or know someone who is, you can call the National Runaway Safeline at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929.)
