Road Trip Worthy: This Beach is Covered in Beautiful Stones but May Also be Haunted
People travel for hours to this small town beach covered in the smoothest stones, but you should never spend the night here!
Located in Machaisport near Buck's Harbor is this amazing beach offering about a half mile of rocky beach. But this beach is a little different than most in Maine. This beach is covered in millions of smooth stones of every color. In fact it is a challenge to find a single stone with a rough or jagged edge.
The beach is called Jaspers Beach because of the reddish hue of the stones when wet as it appears similar to that of red jasper. Most of the red stones you will find here are not actual jasper but are still unique and beautiful.
Travelers flock to this somewhat secret spot to gaze at the scenery and examine the rocks in awe, but the locals here know something most travelers don't. The beach may be haunted.
According to local lore and a story published in 'Dark Woods, Chill Waters' by Marcus Librizzi, there is more than one spirit to be seen or sensed here. Sadly, the beach, while a pristine place to the eye, has a dark past. There have been suicides on the beach including one forlorn girl who is heard wailing in the wind today.
The second spirit is a good reason to not spend the night on the beach. According to the story, there was once a man who liked to bring his dates to the beach for romantic interactions. One night he brought a date who had just broken up with a very angry boyfriend. This ex-boyfriend heard about her date and showed up at the beach to kill his girlfriend's new lover.
The man who was killed is said to still show himself on the shores from time to time. The killer was never caught, but many say if you stay the night on this beach you will have the same fate. There are actually multiple signs saying no overnight camping or parking on the beach, so there's two good reasons to not stay the night!
