Rihanna Suing Topshop Over Unauthorized Use of Her Image on a Shirt
How’s this for irony? Rihanna, who is known for aversion to shirts, posting topless shots on Instragram like it was her job, is suing U.K. retailer Topshop for its unauthorized use of her image on one of its shirts!
RiRi is asking for $5 million for her trouble.
The company used an image of the singer from her ‘We Found Love’ video, with her hair all piled atop her pretty head. She was reportedly embroiled in eight months of negotiations with the fashion destination due to the shirts that feature her face and were produced and sold without her permission. The company was not concerned about her issues.
A source said, “Rihanna’s management asked Topshop a number of times to stop selling her image and were told, ‘We do what we want.’”
Apparently, Topshop bought the photos from the photographer, who owns the rights. The company does not pay artist licensing fees, however. U.K. law does not favor the artist, either. The Ri tee is only being sold in the U.K., since that’s where the photog owns the rights.
The insiders said that Ri is mostly mad at the fact that they told her to go lay an egg regarding the issue. “What is most offensive for Rihanna is that they basically told her, ‘Go to h—. We don’t care; we are going to continue selling you,’” the source revealed. Even more of a slap in the face? The $5,000 the company offered her for the use of her image.
The singer has hired international lawyers to handle her suit. Further complicating this sitch is the fact that Rihanna designs for River Island, a fellow British retailer. So that adds a whole other level of conflict and headaches, since she has a brand to sell and another well-known fashion retailer hawking items with her face on it detracts from her River Island wares.
Team RiRi or Team Topshop? We bet Demi Lovato, often dressed and styled by Topshop, wouldn’t mind the company using her face on T-shirts!
