A northern Maine man died Sunday when his truck went off a single-lane wooden bridge on an icy gravel and dirt road into a creek.

Penobscot County Sheriff’s Sgt. Roy Perry said emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a vehicle off the Lakeville Shores roadway in Lakeville Plantation at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Springfield Fire & Rescue Department Assistant fire Chief-EMT Tim Peters arrived at Dynamite Bridge 10 minutes later and found the Chevy Silverado overturned in the creekbed and submerged to its wheels.

A tow-truck operator was called into winch the pickup out of the creek, at which point the man's body was located. He's been identified as 66-year-old Ronald Bradford of Lakeville. Bradford was killed in the crash. Bradford’s friends found the truck in the water and called 911.

Penobscot County Detective William Flagg said there is a sharp curve just before the narrow bridge and Bradford may have misjudged the turn.

Police say Bradford was driving on Lakeville Shores Road around 10:30 p.m. when he hit some ice on a corner. The truck slid sideways off the bridge, which reportedly only had thin wooden guardrails

The gravel and dirt road is managed by a local homeowner's association, which does contract out for road salt and sand treatment.

Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have witnessed or heard the accident to call them at 945-4636.
