Passersby Pull 8-year-old From Accident That Killed the Driver

A Jay woman was killed when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle on Sunday. Passersby were able to successfully pull an 8-year-old from the woman's pickup.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said it was around 1:30 on Sunday afternoon when State Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on Route 27 in Sidney. Initial results of the investigation suggest that 53-year-old Sherry Turner of Jay was traveling south in her pickup truck when she crossed the center line. The truck struck an oncoming Toyota Tundra operated by 55-year-old Robert Rice of Windsor. Turner's vehicle rolled over and caught fire.

Passersby were able to pull an 8-year-old passenger from Turner's vehicle and the child was sent to Maine Medical Center in Portland. McCausland says the child was conscious, alert, and talking at the hospital. Rice and his passenger, 52-year-old Raymond Rice were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Augusta where Raymond was treated for a broken bone in his leg. Robert received no serious injuries.

Turner was found deceased in her vehicle as first responders arrived on scene. The investigation is ongoing.
