Part Of Bangor Waterfront Walkway Remains Closed Due To Sinkhole

A sinkhole that opened up on the Bangor waterfront this week has been temporally filled with stone, and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area until it can be permanently fixed.

City officials reported Wednesday that a sinkhole had opened up next to the paved walkway along the waterfront, near the intersection of Railroad and Front Streets.

Dana Wardwell, Bangor Public Works Director, estimated that it was 8 feet deep and 15 feet wide. He said it was likely caused by a collapsed storm drain.

The hole was temporarily filled with stone Wednesday night. Pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area until a more permanent fix can be implemented.

“We have a 42 inch interceptor sewer line that’s in close proximity to where the hole is and then we’ve also got to deal with this ground very close to the river – we have tidal influence so the ground becomes saturated. It’s going to be a little bit challenging to work,” John Theriault, Bangor City Engineer, told WABI.
