A one-year jail sentence has been handed down to a Palmyra man accused of robbing a man at gunpoint and ordering him to dig his own grave.

Matthew Flood, 30, pleaded guilty earlier this month to aggravated assault, robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

WABI-TV5 on Thursday reported that Flood was sentenced to 364 days in jail for the crimes.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office says on Jan. 21 a 63-year-old man reported that he was attacked by Flood after he went to Flood's home on Webb Road to pick up an acquaintance who asked for a ride.

The man told deputies Flood attacked him and snatched a loaded pistol he was carrying. The man said he was then pistol whipped and robbed of a small amount of cash, a knife and his cellphone. Deputies say Flood then tried to get the man to go outside and dig his own grave, but the victim convinced Flood to let him live.

The man suffered severe injuries to his head, chest and ribs.
