Police have released the identity of a man who was killed in a police-involved shooting during a standoff in Orrington overnight.

The Department of Public Safety said in a media release that 54-year-old Mark Ellis was armed and had barricaded himself in a house at 488 Johnson Mill Road in Orrington. Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputies, and police from Bangor and Brewer, plus State Police had swarmed the neighborhood after Ellis allegedly made threats against law enforcement over the phone.

At 5:15 Tuesday night, Maine State Police Tactical and Crisis Negotiation Teams responded to help with the criminal threatening and terrorizing complaint. During the standoff, there was an exchange of gunfire during which Ellis was struck. He died at the scene. The standoff lasted more than 12 hours, with police trying repeatedly to communicate with Ellis through the use of a megaphone.

Three members of the State Police Tactical Team were involved in the use of deadly force. The officers are Sergeant Josh Haines, Sergeant Peter Michaud, and Trooper Dave Coflesky. The officers will be placed on administrative leave which is standard practice in this type of investigation.

The case will now be investigated by the Maine Attorney General’s office, as is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.
