Police responding to a report of a family fight inside an apartment over the weekend found that it had spilled out into the street. So far, none of the family wants to press charges although one man was stabbed.

Waterville Police Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said in a press release that officers went to the home at 18 Gray Street just after 11:00 Sunday night and found a group of seven Individuals in the middle of the street. Many of the people were intoxicated, agitated, and screaming at each other, and several had blood on their clothes and bodies.

They pointed police in the direction of someone who was running away and said that he had been stabbed. The officers caught up to the 37-year-old and discovered he had a penetrating stab wound to the chest. He was taken to Inland Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators interviewed the people at the Gray Street home and determined that the man who was stabbed had gone to the home to confront his 48-year-old ex-girlfriend. Her family and friends got involved when the dispute became physical. The man was stabbed by a 25-year-old man who told police he was acting in self-defense. The knife was recovered from the nearby vacant lot where it was thrown.

Rumsey says, so far, no one involved in the incident wants to press charges, including the victim, and no one has been arrested. The District Attorney's office will now determine if any criminal charges will be filed. Due to conflicting reports from witnesses at the scene, Rumsey says determining who was at fault and the exact sequence of events would be difficult. Investigators say the victim was on probation, however, with a condition that he not have any contact with the ex-girlfriend. Information regarding the incident has been sent to the Maine Department of Corrections, whose Probation Officers will follow up.
