These days, dealing with the liability of transporting kids to school in bad weather, has been causing a lot of schools around Maine to add days at the end of the year to make up for all the snow days during the winter. My sister is a grade school teacher, and last June, she was working all the way up until June 22nd!

One school district is creating a pilot program that could be a game changer. According to an article from WGME TV, the Five Town Community School District and SAD #28, are trying out the idea of "remote school days".

On these days, students in 7th - 12th grade will be sent assignments via email, that are expected to be completed for the next days. Younger students will be given "blizzard bags" which will contain activities for them to put together for the next day. If a student were to not finish the assignments, then they would be counted as absent for the day. Teachers will have to keep their virtual office open from 10:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. as well, and answer questions by email.

In a day and age where adults are working from home more and more all the time, it makes sense that kids could do some of their work from home too. Besides, we all know there's only so many ways to keep yourself entertained on a snow day. Believe it or not, when I was a kid, I likely would've enjoyed a quick assignment to keep me occupied. But hindsight is always 20/20.

Anyhow, it's still a pilot program that is not fully recognized by the state in terms of them counting as a makeup day, but it's a step. But for now, it's some very awesome forward thinking, that may just help keep the kids getting out on time for the summer. I'm sure they won't complain.
