The Internet was abuzz today (June 4) with rumors that Robert Pattinson has been tapped to star as the fedora-wearing, whip-cracking Indiana Jones in the franchise's newest film.

The story began when British tabloid Daily Star quoted a Hollywood source who claims that Harrison Ford has gotten too old to play the beloved action hero -- and that Disney is "looking at its long-term options for the 'Indiana Jones' franchise."

“They feel that the series has huge potential on many levels, starting with the films leading to other spin-offs like games which can generate more money than movies," the source explained, revealing that Pattinson is the top contender for the role.

"Rob is top of the initial list because he has showed his acting stripes away from 'Twilight,'" the source continued. "But the competition will be stiff."

According to the tabloid, Shia LaBeouf is not one of the contenders to take over the role -- despite the fact that he played Indiana Jones' son in 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.'

And as for the R. Pattz rumors -- it seems like we'll just have to take them with a grain of salt for right now, as countless news sources (including Moviefone) have dismissed the idea as a "crazy rumor."

PopCrushers + Robert Pattinson fans, what do you think? Would you like to see R. Pattz as the next Indiana Jones?
