Nicki Minaj Is Concerned ‘American Idol’ Will Damage Her Precarious Street Cred

High up on the list of things that shouldn’t concern Nicki Minaj: becoming “too famous.” Yet the singer is incredibly worried that her new role as judge on ‘American Idol‘ could do just that, even though it opens her up to whole a new audience of exactly no one since ‘Idol’ watchers already know who she is.

Regardless, Minaj still had plenty of concerns before officially signing on to the position.

Before taking up the judge mantle, she “had a lot of talks with people — my family, my best friends, my label, Lil Wayne, management and then the producers,” she commented, making it abundantly clear that Lil Wayne is neither family nor a friend and therefore deserves his own category.

And really, who wouldn’t ask Lil Wayne for guidance? That’s why we sport WWLWD bracelets around here. Wisdom!

Anyway, Minaj is concerned she’ll lose cred with members of the hip-hop community who might look down on her for joining the mainstream television show, saying, “Sometimes you are afraid of being too famous because it’s almost, like, is that even cool?”

“Being that accessible, someone you see on TV every week? I never pictured myself as that type of person. I’m still surprised that I decided to do it,” she added, even though wearing things like this should pretty much assure she’ll never be anyone’s version of June Cleaver.

Mike Darnell, the network’s “president of alternative entertainment” (can you say job title of awesome?) ultimately changed Nicki’s mind, promising, “We’re going to protect you; you’re going to love it, we’re a big family.”

A big family that hands out even bigger paychecks — Minaj is set to collect $12 million just for telling people what she thinks about them, something we do for free after a few glasses of wine.

Despite all the ‘Idol’ talk, Minaj refused to address the possible publicity-related spat between herself and fellow judge Mariah Carey, only saying, “Sometimes things get heated for their own reasons.”

Or because both people involved are drama-prone divas. Whichever.
