A 5-year-old child was hit by a passing motorist as he played at the end of his driveway in Newburgh.

The accident happened just after 6:30 Tuesday evening on the North Road. The boy and another child were playing near the road when he was struck by a passing car. State Police say the driver stopped, called 911, and helped the boy until an ambulance arrived. The other child wasn't hurt.

Trooper Adam Gould told WFVX-TV that investigators are looking into the time of day and glare from the sun as possible factors in the accident. They will also review the driver's phone records to make sure it wasn't a texting issue. The driver has been cooperative with police.

The little boy is said to be in stable condition, but broke both legs, among other injuries.
