Almost exactly a year since the Wanted announced their hiatus, Nathan Sykes is officially going solo.

The 21-year-old singer made the official announcement today (Jan. 26), revealing in a press release that he is in the process of working on his debut solo album and has already collaborated with such artists as Harmony Samuels, Babyface and more.

"I've been lucky enough to work with some of the best producers in the industry," he told Hunger TV. "Having already worked with Harmony on the track 'Almost is Never Enough' with Ariana Grande, he really helped me create the sound and he’s now the Executive Producer on the album and together we have created some of my favorite tracks on the album."

And speaking of Ariana Grande, well, Sykes has revealed that yes, there is a song about their breakup on his new album.

"The most emotional song [on the album] is about me telling myself not to be angry at the breakup because sometimes things just don't work out. That's life," he told the Sun (quote via J-14). "The time we broke up was really tough. The Wanted decided to take a break and I lost my grandad. I was not in the best place. She was my first grown-up relationship. But sometimes you have to go into a place like that to be able to find the best music out of it."

While he admitted that the 'Problem' singer doesn't know about the song, he revealed that it's not a scathing track with too many details.

"It's important not to be selfish with writing so there's no detailed version of events," he explained. "And there's no bad blood. She's a lovely girl."

And he's moved on not just from Ariana Grande. Sykes is eager to get his solo career up and running -- it's a chance for people to see him out on his own, as an individual.

"From being one fifth of a group to being a soloist, there is always the chance to surprise people as they are only now seeing 100% of me for the first time," he told Hunger TV. "It's like a second first impression and whereas I don't necessarily think it's important to change people's perceptions, I do think it's exciting that people won't just see me as 'the young one in The Wanted' and can have the freedom to judge me as an individual and not just 'that bloke from that band.'"

PopCrushers and the Wanted Fanmily, Nathan Sykes' debut album is due out later this year.
