Former Bangor Police Chief Don Winslow was a man with many, many friends.

Hundreds of those friends gathered for Winslow's funeral on Thursday afternoon at St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor. Winslow died of lung cancer on July 10 at age 57.

The city's former top cop was  a beloved figure in the community, where he served on the police force for three decades. He had successfully battled the disease a few years ago when both he and his wife were diagnosed. Winslow had entered his name as a candidate for Penobscot County Sheriff when he found out the cancer was back.

Flags in the city were flown at half staff on Thursday to honor the former chief. Winslow will be buried at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery on Ohio Street.
