A motorcyclist who was taken to the hospital after his bike collided with an SUV on Route 1A in Holden last week has died, police said.

Shawn Abbott, 44, of Brewer, was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Monday night, Holden police Officer Ed Benjamin told the Bangor Daily News on Tuesday.

Abbott was traveling toward Ellsworth when an SUV operated by James Swett, 65, of Orrington turned left onto Route 1A from Upper Dedham Road. Swett pulled out in front of Abbott and the two vehicles collided, Benjamin said.

Swett told police he never saw Abbott's bike.

The crash last Friday caused significant traffic delays that lasted for hours. The road was even shut down in both directions for a short time.

The crash is still under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the file will be reviewed by the Penobscot County District Attorney’s office to determine if any charges will be filed.
