A Massachusetts man and a local married couple are facing charges for allegedly selling crack cocaine near a Bangor park.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says an investigation into the sale of the drug led investigators to a man from Dorchester, Massachusetts, initially known only by the street name 'Chosen.' He was later identified as 49-year-old Shawn Larts, who has a long criminal history in his home state, which includes drug and firearms offenses. Investigators determined that he was allegedly selling crack cocaine from an apartment located inside 175 Hammond Street in Bangor. Undercover agents were able to make a number of purchases of crack cocaine from Larts and his associates from inside apartment #4 at that address.

Last night, drug agents and Bangor Police Officers took Larts into custody as he was leaving the Hammond Street residence. A search warrant was executed, which netted about $2,500 in cash that's suspected to be the proceeds of illegal drug sales, 10 grams of crack cocaine, and other evidence of drug trafficking. Also arrested during that search were the apartment's occupants, 64-year-old Paul Ness and 59-year-old Yvonne Ness.

Because the apartment is located within 1,000 feet of a city park (Coe Park), which is designated as a drug free safe zone, Larts was charged with Aggravated class A trafficking in drugs, as were Mr. and Mrs. Ness.  They were all taken to the Penobscot County Jail where bail has been set at $10,000 cash.

MDEA officials say the investigation is continuing and more arrests are possible. Anyone with information about this investigation or the illegal sale of drugs anywhere in the state is encouraged to contact the MDEA office closest to them or by calling the MDEA tip-line at 800-452-6457.
