The ‘Man of Steel’ Prequel You Need to See Before Watching the Film This Summer

Man of Steel prequel
DC Comics

If you’re excited for ‘Man of Steel‘ (and how can you not be), you’re going to want to see this. It’s the official ‘Man of Steel’ prequel that ties directly in to the upcoming movie. With a story by ‘Man of Steel’ writer David Goyer and director Zack Snyder, this doesn’t feature much Superman but it does include a somewhat surprising lead character: Supergirl. Is this the start of a larger ‘Man of Steel’ universe? What hints does this hold for the movie? Let’s find out!

Instead of focusing on Kal-El (‘Man of Steel’ is essentially its own prequel story for Superman), this new 42-page comic follows Kara
Zor-El, better known as Supergirl. The story takes place around 1,000 years before the events in ‘Man of Steel’ and features some familiar faces like Dev-Em. But what does it mean for ‘Man of Steel’? Is this setting up a larger Superman universe that could eventually include Supergirl?

Well, first why don’t you take a read through the comic below and we’ll follow up with some spoiler-y comments/theories afterward.

So there won’t be any Supergirl action in ‘Man of Steel’ and unless it’s a prequel, we can’t imagine there being much room in the cinematic universe for her either. The ship crashes at the end and a figure is seen walking away. Later, the cave drawings show that the Eskimos watched the ship crash and a figure walk away with the “S” shield. Since Kara is the only one with the “S” we can assume that she survived the crash but wandered off into the ice and cold. It’s possible she’s still frozen in the ice during ‘Man of Steel’ Captain America style but the more direct link would be that the new Fortress of Solitude in ‘Man of Steel’ is actually the ship that Supergirl crashed all those many years ago.

What do you think? Do you like the idea of setting up the Superman universe outside of the events in ‘Man of Steel’ potentially laying the framework for future adventures? Do you wish this comic had more actual Superman in it?

‘Man of Steel’ hits theaters on June 14.
