A Hancock County man is charged with arson in connection with a fire that destroyed a house he'd be hired to help clear out.

The State Fire Marshal's office has charged 47-year-old David Smith of Deer Isle with Arson and Aggravated Criminal Mischief. He's accused of setting a fire on November 15th, 2014 at 25 Sunset Drive in Stonington.

The house that burned was owned by Michael Hutchinson, who lives next door. He had recently purchased the two-story house and property and hired Smith to help clean out the building. Once that was done, Hutchinson intended to tear it down.

No one was injured in the blaze. The charges are the result of an investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. He was arrested Friday and released on bail. Smith is expected to appear in an Ellsworth court in February.
