Man Dies After Falling Into Fire Pit

A 52-year-old man died of his injuries after falling into a fire pit. Witnesses say he had been drinking with friends in his backyard before the accident.

The State Fire Marshal's office says Timothy W. Small of Raymond died at a Boston hospital where he was being treated for burns to 60% of his body. He died Sunday evening, after being injured at around two o'clock Saturday morning.

Investigators determined Small was drinking with friends around his rock-lined fire pit Friday night, but was alone when the accident took place. He managed to stagger into his home where he refused medical attention and went to bed. Friends staying at the house called for an ambulance a few hours later. Small was taken to Maine Medical Center but was then transferred to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
