A months-long investigation into heroin trafficking in Piscataquis and Penobscot Counties has resulted in the arrest of a Massachusetts man and the seizure of a significant amount of the drug, police said.

During the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency investigation, which involved the undercover purchase of heroin, investigators determined that Don Twiggs, 38, of Hyde Park, Massachusetts was transporting significant amounts of the drug to Maine for redistribution throughout Piscataquis and Penobscot Counties, the agency said in a news release Tuesday.

Agents stopped the vehicle Twiggs was riding in Monday night as it exited Interstate 95 northbound in Newport. Investigators suspected that Twiggs would be returning to Maine with heroin and were able to obtain a search warrant for his vehicle.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately 200 grams of suspected heroin and 50 grams of cocaine, the release said. The combined street value of the drugs was approximately $55,000.

As part of the investigation, agents executed a search warrant at a residence in Millinocket, where Twiggs had recently been staying. Police said additional evidence of drug trafficking was collected during the search.

Twiggs was arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and charged with aggravated trafficking in schedule W drugs, a class A crime. The offense was aggravated due to the amount of heroin that was seized.

Twiggs was being held Tuesday evening on $15,000 cash bail and was expected to make his initial court appearance Wednesday in Bangor Unified Court.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
