A man and a teenager are dead after the adult tried to save the boy while swimming in the Mattawamkeag River.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says 49-year-old Jamie Main of Crystal and 13-year-old Kobe Berry of Bangor were swimming in the West Branch of the river on Friday afternoon. Witnesses in Island Falls reported seeing a boy struggling in the current near the middle of the river. Main swam out to help him but both of them became submerged.

Maine Game Wardens, Island Falls Fire Department, and the Maine State Police responded to the call at around 3:30. A search began and included the use of watercraft, aircraft, and foot searches along the river. Main's body was recovered at 6 p.m. and Berry was recovered two hours later.
