Firefighters were on the scene of a major structure fire on South Main Street overnight. Police blocked off the street, from South Brewer Drive to Pendleton Street, as crews from several towns worked to contain the blaze.

The Brewer Police Department posted on its Facebook page that a major structure fire on South Main Street  forced them to close the road off to traffic in the early morning hours. The six-unit apartment building reportedly had four units that were occupied and everyone got out safely. Despite the warmer temperatures overnight, battling the blaze was challenging because the buildings in that neighborhood are so close together. Even so, crews were able to keep the fire contained.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, but say it started in a barn-like structure at the rear of the building. That area was primarily used for storage.
