Mainers are digging out after a major winter storm brought heavy snow and strong winds to the state.

The National Weather Service in Caribou reports Bangor International Airport recorded 18.3 inches of fresh snow. Holden reported 24 inches of new snow.

The cyclone also brought strong winds to the state.

Preliminary reports show wind gusts reaching 49 MPH in Bar Harbor. Brewer experienced gusts of 43 MPH. Frenchboro recorded the strongest gusts in the state, at 63 MPH.

The storm surge and high tide caused flooding along the coast.

Now the area will return to bitter cold temperatures. Below zero temps are expected through the weekend.
