Maine State Police are urging Kmart customers to monitor their bank accounts after a data breach compromised credit and debit card numbers belonging to Kmart customers.

"Kmart store payment data systems were infected with a form of malicious code that was undetectable by current anti-virus systems and application controls," Sears Holdings, parent company of Kmart, said in a statement. "Once aware of the new malicious code, we quickly removed it and contained the event.”

The company said it's confident that customers can safely use their credit and debit cards in its retail stores and no personal identifying information, such as names, addresses, social security numbers, and email addresses, were obtained in the breach.

However, the company said it believes "certain credit card numbers have been compromised."

"Those who have shopped at a Kmart in recent months should check their statements carefully to make sure that their card information has not been used for unauthorized purchases," Maine State Police said Thursday.

State police said they don't know which stores were affected, but if customers want to learn more about the incident they can visit Kmart.com or call the company's customer care center at 888-488-5978.

Kmart's retail stores include locations in Auburn, Augusta and Waterville.
