A proposed bill might change the way you find a four legged friend.

Lawmakers are considering a bill which would prohibit the sale of dogs and cats in Maine pet stores. Supporters say they've purchased sick dogs and cats from stores in Maine.

The Maine Humane Society says the animals are shipped from large operations that are more concerned with cash, than healthy critters. Store owners argue their animals are quality and cared for.

Maine Humane Society Director Katie Hansberry told lawmakers: 'The majority of puppies that are sold in pet stores across the country, including here in Maine, come from puppy mills and they are kept in horrific conditions, do not get the socialization that they need, veterinary care.'

Maine is the first state to propose a ban on the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores.
