Longtime Bangor High School Principal Norris Nickerson passed away on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the Bangor School Department.

Nickerson served as principal for 22 years until his retirement in 2011. He was surrounded by his family when he died, according to the statement.

Nickerson's tenure at Bangor High spanned 49 years. He began teaching biology, physical education and health and coaching football in 1962. He later became an assistant principal in 1974, and served in this role until he assumed the principal's position in 1989.

"He had high expectations for all, including himself. He was tough, but fair, and no one cared more deeply about Bangor High and the success of all student," Bangor Superintendent of Schools Betsy Webb said in a statement on the system's website.
