Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith said in a press release that contractor Todd Whittaker, age 38 from Brewer, was arrested earlier this month after an investigation into the theft of just over $14,000 from BBS Lobster company in Machiasport. Just after Whittaker had been working as a contractor for the facility, he fraudulently cashed a check that he had taken from the company.Routine accounting audits discovered the theft.

Upon further investigation by the Sheriff's Office, Whittaker was also found to be on 2 active bail conditions for drug related crimes. The previous offenses of trafficking and possession of Schedule drugs are from Aroostook and Penobscot counties.

Whittaker is charged with Theft by Unauthorized Taking and Violation of Conditions of Release. His bail was set at $20,000 cash for the theft and bail was denied for the other charge. Whittaker indicated to police, during the investigation, that the lobster company theft was connected to his heroin addiction.
