Sonny Colburn and the late Lew Gilman had an idea 50 years ago - a springtime canoe race on the Kenduskeag Stream. Turns out it was a pretty good idea!

Saturday morning, the Mystic Tie Grange will host breakfast and then hundreds of paddlers will hop in canoes and kyaks of all sizes, and join in the 50th Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race.

Many competitors are out for the best time in their classification or maybe the fastest overall time.

Many others dress in costumes and take their time down the 16.5 mile course.

The total numbers over the first 49 years are impressive. 35,000 people entered. 19,000 boats.

Robert Lang from New Brunswick holds the all-time record for fastest time - 1-hour 50-minutes 8-seconds. Lang also owns the most wins with 12.

Trevor MacLean from Nova Scotia could tie that 12-win mark with a victory this year.

Gumby boat back for its 30th race.
