Lady Gaga Dissed By Yeah Yeah Yeahs Singer Karen O
Lady Gaga is no stranger to being dissed by fellow females who criticize her sound and style. It happens often even with artists signed to her label (Interscope). M.I.A. has taken shots at Ma Monster, and now, Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ singer Karen O has slammed Gaga, saying that she lacks authenticity and originality. Ouch. Jealous much?
When asked if she or her band felt any sort of kinship with Mama Monster due to their outrageous performances and styles, Karen said, “No, no, no! I feel there’s a core authenticity or originality lacking there. It’s so referential.”
Before we had a chance to point out that everything in culture and music has a pre-existing reference point, the singer continued, “I mean, everything is referenced, but when you read ‘Just Kids’ by Patti Smith, there’s idol worship towards poets or Jim Morrison or whoever, but it seems to be processed through her filter and it ends up becoming very Patti Smith. That’s different from just picking what you like from what other people do and presenting it as your own.”
So Karen O is saying that Gaga copies off others but instead of putting it through her own distinct processing filter, so that the end result is uniquely Gaga, it’s just an imitation and a replica of what inspired it. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, Karen O’s criticism of Gaga is very referential to Madonna’s. (Dang, we’re good!)
Somehow we think little monsters will take issue with that and proceed to trash Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for daring to call Gaga a copycat.
The singer’s comments seem really mean and critical, but hey, opinions are like a certain part of the anatomy. Everyone has one.
