I guess there’s not much reason for me to watch the new La La Land trailer. I saw the movie back at the Toronto Film Festival. Why watch the coming attractions for a movie I’ve already seen? Frankly, I watched it (twice) because I want to see La La Land again, and I can’t right now, so watching the trailer is the next best option.

The new musical from director Damien Chazelle, who previously made the outstanding drama Whiplash, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a pair of star-crossed Los Angeles lovers. And the star-crossed thing is kind of literal; in one of the film’s transcendent musical numbers, Gosling and Stone dance in a planetarium, and then up and into the cosmos. It’s pure magic. Here’s the official synopsis:

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

The actual movie is every bit as charming, whimsical, and romantic as the trailer makes it look.  And since they haven’t released the movie’s terrific soundtrack yet (RELEASE THE SOUNDTRACK ALREADY) I think I’m going to watch the trailer one more time. Or maybe 50 more times. La La Land opens in theaters on December 9.
