In case you missed it, here's a cool time-lapse video of last night's Super Moon. It was so beautiful!

I'm a little bit of a 'space geek.' Ever since my family visited the NASA space center in Florida, I've been in love with the idea of hopping on a space shuttle and seeing the Earth from outer space. We watched a rocket take off during our visit, and I was totally impressed!

I took Intro to Astronomy, many moons ago, when I was in college. I didn't learn much in the class, (my professor was a little spacey from the 'herbal' cigarettes he used to smoke before class) but it did spark a fascination in me with the moon and stars. So when I read about the Super Moon, I knew that I had to check it out, even if it meant losing sleep before a Monday morning show.

And it was a very unusual occurrence Sunday night. A perigree super moon, when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth, paired with a total lunar eclipse hasn't happened since 1982. And it will be decades before it happens again!

Jim and I started keeping an eye on things at around 8:15. Before the eclipse, the moon was huge and so bright that we had broad swaths of moonlight making our yard look like it was twilight. It was beautiful! Then the eclipse started, and the moon slowly turned an incredible orange/brown color. It was well worth the lack of sleep. And, hey, we have plenty of coffee here on a Monday morning!

Last night's lunar show really convinced me that I need to get a nice camera. I have a PHD (Push Here, Dummy) camera, that works pretty well most of the time. But it just doesn't do night shots. Those huge moon beams across our yard that made it look like daylight came out BLACK with my camera. So, thanks to my high school classmate John Edwards for his beautiful professional shot! And I found the video of the whole eclipse, in case you missed it, on YouTube from UpTake Video. Now you can say you watched it too!
