Tristan Kaldenberg, whose vehicle was hit head-on by a truck being driven the wrong way on I-95, is recovering from multiple injuries, including facial reconstructive surgery.

The 19-year-old Littleton, Massachusetts native's life changed forever just before 7 p.m. on March 12. He was headed northbound on the interstate, traveling back to school at Bangor's Husson University, when a pickup suddenly appeared in front of him, traveling the wrong way. Police said there was no time for Tristan to react before his vehicle was hit head-on by the truck, driven by 70-year-old Hugh Brawn of Clinton. So far, no charges have been filed against Brawn, but police have said they believe he may have been intoxicated and disoriented.

Now, Kaldenberg is in a Boston hospital, recovering from multiple injuries. He broke his pelvis, femur, sacrum, and ribs, along with his jaw, cheekbones, and his nose. He's also lost several teeth. WGME-TV reporters visited Tristan and said that he's in good spirits and determined to get back on his feet and return to school for the fall semester.

His road to recovery will be long. He's already undergone many surgeries, including the removal of his spleen, and is scheduled to start another round this week to reconstruct his face. But he's taken his first steps, according to WGME-TV, and has a positive attitude. Tristan's father, Casey told reporters that the paramedics in Maine must have done things perfectly for their son to have survived the crash.

Maine State Police continue to investigate the accident. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Tristan's co-Presidents from Littleton High School's Class of 2016 to help the family with medical costs.
