A horse in Northern Maine had to be put down after causing two motor vehicle accidents.

It was just before 7:30 on Friday when State Police were called to a car accident on Route 1 in Littleton involving a horse. When Troopers arrived, they found that it was actually two accidents that started when the horse ran into the roadway, striking a Subaru driven by Brian McDougal of New Sweden. Shortly after the collision with McDougal's vehicle, a Peterbilt truck, driven by Geary Bonville of Presque Isle, hit the horse.

Both vehicles were damaged but were driven from the scene. The owner of the horse had a neighbor put the animal down, due to the extent of its injuries.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Houlton Police and continue to investigate the incident.
