A motorcyclist is in serious condition after a crash that followed a brief pursuit by Police on Saturday.

WABI-TV reports the accident happened around 10 p.m. right in front of the Holden police station. State Police say a trooper attempted to pull over the bike when it was spotted speeding on Route 1A towards Brewer. The motorcyclist took off and the trooper pursued the bike briefly, but then broke off the chase when it became too dangerous because of high speeds and an abundance of traffic.

A short distance later, after the trooper had turned off his lights and siren, he came across the bike and operator in the middle of the road. Police say the motorcycle had struck a guardrail.

The operator has been identified as 32-year-old Joshua Soper of Dedham. WABI-TV reports he's undergoing surgeries. The crash remains under investigation.
