#Hashtag Hometown of the Week: Veazie

Every week we feature a new hometown and share photos and facts using hashtags on social media. This week our #hashtag hometown is Veazie!

Once part of Bangor, Veazie was separated into its own town in 1853 because the towns wealthiest resident thought Bangor's taxes were too high. This wealthy man was General Samuel Veazie, from which the town was named.

The town was built on sawmills powered by the Penobscot River and Railroads. Many of the town residents were employed at Veazie Hydro, a large employer at the time. You can still see signs of the past along the river where dams, pieces of piers, and the railroad remains.

Today the town is home to about 1,900 people. Though you wouldn't know it as much of the town is forested. It is a quiet, quaint place to raise a family and a great place to live if you want to be in the country, but near Bangor.
