Today back in the day, the nickel was introduced.

In 1866 the U.S. Treasury Department introduced the new coin. The face of the coin was a shield, on the reverse was a number five.

1886 through 1912 the nickel was re-minted. On one side was the head of liberty and roman numeral five on the reverse.

 

 

 

 

Buffalo Nickel

In 1913 the buffalo nickel was minted. One side had an Indian head and a buffalo on the reverse. In 1913 a nickle had the same buying power as $1.18 today.

Today’s nickel features Thomas Jefferson on one side and his home ‘Monticello’ on the reverse. Today’s nickel is made of 25% nickel and 75% copper.
