The Good Shepherd Food Bank is moving its distribution center from Brewer to Bangor, and making use of a large space recently vacated by a media group.

The state's largest charitable hunger relief organization is headquartered in Auburn, with distribution centers in Brewer and Biddeford, and has an administrative office in Portland. Currently, the central Maine center is in the Brewer Industrial Park. But that's about to change.

Good Shepherd has purchased a warehouse facility located at 11 Penobscot Meadow Drive in Hampden. The address may not sound familiar, but the picture says it all. It's the former printing plant for the Bangor Daily News that can be seen as you head out Route 202 toward Hampden.

Cold storage has become a critical need for the Food Bank due to a significant increase in the distribution of perishable food items. In Brewer, there just wasn't enough cooler space to deal with meat and dairy items, as well as fresh produce with their limited 7,400 square feet of storage. But the new building offers 32,000 square feet of warehouse space, which will provide great flexibility.

Good Shepherd Food Bank will host an event at its new Hampden warehouse at 10:00 a.m. on November 12th to show off the facility and discuss how it will affect distribution in the region.
