FX’s ‘Fargo’ TV Series Won’t Include Any Original Film Characters?

FX Fargo TV Series Frances McDormand Marge Gunderson

Though we’ve known since the beginning that FX’s forthcoming ‘Fargo‘ TV series (or limited series) would follow an all-new true crime story with the same “Minnesota Nice” sentiment of the 1996 Coen brothers film, less clear was whether or not Frances McDormand, or any of the original characters might pop up across the project. So, what does the president of MGM TV have to say about the possibility?

“[McDormand’s character Sheriff Marge Gunderson]’s not in it,” said MGM TV president Roma Khanna at a recent MIPCOM conference. “It’s not a retelling of the same story, because on so many levels that would be foolish…[Fargo] was done so perfectly the first time around,” said the president, comparing FX’s reboot of the franchise to the manner in which MTV’s ‘Teen Wolf‘ created a much darker, different vibe from its ’80s movie predecessor.

It remains to be seen however, if FX’s ‘Fargo’ will at all acknowledge or reference the events of the award-winning classic film, or if the new version will establish an entirely different continuity. FX President John Landgraf previously told us that the series will have a young female deputy character somewhat in line with Frances McDormand’s leading role in the original, while the characters from the first 10 episodes wouldn’t carry over to a potential second season, should the network order one.

Elsewhere, FX’s as-yet unscheduled series stars Billy Bob Thornton in the role of mysterious con man Lorne Malvo, along with ‘Sherlock”s Martin Freeman as the henpecked salesman type that previously seemed in line with William H. Macy’s role of the film. Additionally, Colin Hanks will portray Duluth Police Deputy Gus Grimly, a single father who finds himself faced with a choice between his own personal safety and his police duties as he comes face-to-face with a killer.

For those unaware, the original ‘Fargo’ told the story of pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, tasked with traversing the snow-filled landscapes of Minnesota to solve a series of murders linked to the dirty dealings of an inept car salesman (Macy), as things slowly spiraled out of control. The film also featured ‘Boardwalk Empire”s Steve Buscemi, while McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress, as did Joel and Ethan Coen for original screenplay.

We’ve included the original ‘Fargo’ trailer below, but what say you? Are you disappointed that FX’s ‘Fargo’ might not include any of the original film’s characters?
