Two women died in separate, but similar accidents on Wednesday in St. Albans and Bowdoin.

It was around 10:30 Wednesday morning in St. Albans when a car, driven by 63-year-old Madeline Nangle of St. Albans and with her 7-year-old granddaughter in the backseat, stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of Square and the Corinna Roads.

As she pulled into the intersection, her car was struck on the driver’s side by a Ford Fusion, driven by 28-year-old Nadia Viles of St. Albans. Nangle was taken by LifeFlight to a hospital, where she later died. Viles and Nangle’s granddaughter were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The second accident happened just after 1:00 in Bowdoin. Police say 37-year-old Amanda Gauvin of Lewiston failed to stop at a stop sign on Store Road. Her car was struck on the driver’s side as she pulled onto West Road by an SUV driven by 29-year-old Geraldine Scanlon of Sabattus. Gauvin died at the scene. Police say Scanlon wasn’t injured in the crash.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
