An Etna man is dead after an accident that happened just after midnight in Newport.

The Maine Warden Service reports 36-year-old Jack McKay, III was killed when the sled he was driving failed to negotiate a corner on ITS 85 and struck a tree. McKay was riding with two friends at the time of the crash.

The two other riders, 36-year-old Benjamin Roundy of Newport and 36-year-old Cain MacKenzie of Plymouth, were following McKay when the accident happened. MacKenzie was summonsed for operating a snowmobile under the influence. No charges have been filed against Roundy.

Officials are investigating to determine whether other contributing factors, like drugs or alcohol, may have contributed to the crash. The Maine Warden Service was assisted by Newport Police and the Newport Fire Department.

This is the state's sixth snowmobile-related fatality. Yesterday, Buxton Police investigated a fifth fatality that happened on a public road. A woman was killed when her sled was struck by a vehicle while she was following her husband.

Game Wardens urge all riders to ride responsibly and never drink and ride. Remember to always have a charged cellphone and ride with others when possible. And leave a trip plan or notify family or friends about your intended route so, if something does happen, wardens will know where to look for you.
