Everyone loves Emma Watson — the former star of the Harry Potter series has not only proven her worth as a talented actor, but she’s incredibly likable and, if nothing else, her film choices have been somewhat interesting post-Hogwarts (if not always great). So it comes as a bit of a surprise that her latest film, the cult thriller The Colony, only brought in 47 pounds in its opening weekend in the UK. That’s about 60 dollars in the US. That’s not a lot.

I don’t know how well The Colony (previously titled Colonia) was marketed overseas, but we didn’t see much promotion for it stateside following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Per The Guardian, the new film earned just 47 pounds in its opening weekend in UK cinemas, and hit VOD the same day, which partially justifies the low box office take. It also probably doesn’t help that The Colony didn’t exactly wow critics at TIFF, and reviews have been lukewarm at best.

The film was released in the US on April 15 and played 27 screens for one week, bringing in just $15,709, with a per screen average of $583 — way more than what it made in the UK, but still disappointing. You probably weren’t even aware that the movie existed.

The Colony is based on a true story and stars Watson as a young woman who tries to infiltrate a notorious cult in Chile to rescue her boyfriend from the religious group’s leader, a former Hitler Youth. It’s Watson’s first real leading role ahead of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, in which the actress plays Belle opposite Dan Stevens’ Beast. That film hits theaters on March 17, 2017, and given Disney’s success with reimagining their animated classics, Beauty and the Beast will inevitably be a big hit with audiences.

But the low turnout for The Colony indicates that moviegoers aren’t as interested in seeing Watson on screen when she’s not starring in a major studio property. Her previous thriller, Regression, made just under $34,000 at the box office over the course of four weeks, while Watson’s best and most successful post-Potter film to date was The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which grossed $17.7 million in 2012.

Mostly it seems as though audiences would rather see Watson stick to young adult-oriented fare, which is unfortunate given the breadth of her talent. Hopefully that’ll change with The Circle, the new film from End of the Tour director James Ponsoldt, which is based on a Dave Eggers novel and co-stars Tom Hanks and John Boyega. That film is set to hit theaters sometime this year.
