As expected, Eminem‘s ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2′ nabbed the top slot on the Billboard Top 200 chart, selling 792,000 copies its first week in stores. That tally was higher than industry bean counters had forecasted. ‘MMLP2′ also boasted the second-biggest sales week of 2013.

The album leaked a week before release and still sold briskly, which is a testament to Em’s status as, well, a ‘Rap God.’

The biggest first week sales tally of 2013 was notched by Justin Timberlake with ‘The 20/20 Experience,’ a comeback record if there ever was one. That album, which marked the end of his six-year hiatus from music, sold 968,000 copies in March.

Billboard said sources were targeting ‘MMLP2′ to sell around 750,000 copies and it exceeded that prediction.

Em also bucked an industry trend. The new album sold more than its predecessor, ‘Recovery,’ which also debuted at No. 1, moving 741,000 copies back in 2010. Even more interesting, 2009′s chart-topper ‘Relapse’ sold 608,000 copies its first week. So Em keeps besting himself and defying trends in a down record sales climate. That’s no joke.

‘MMLP2′ is also Em’s seventh album in a row to debut at No. 1.

Congrats!
